Job Posting: Clinical Information Librarian (Atlanta, GA)

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Facilitates knowledge sharing across the system for physicians, clinical staff, business leaders, and other employees.
2. Performs extensive searches of medical literature to answer questions and address issues related to patient care, research, and education.
3. Provides individualized, point-of-need instruction to Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta employees on database searching and use of medical literature to build an evidence-based practice.
4. Builds collaborative relationships with clinicians, the librarian will coordinate and attend hospital rounds, morning report, case conferences, and other clinically-relevant forums, and will provide immediate information as requested using current technology and resources.
5. Develops and oversees electronic resource collection, which may include the management of materials for optimal value of resources, preparing budget requests, contract negotiations, overseeing compliance with various licensing agreements, maintaining electronic resources, updating and troubleshooting hardware and software, creating various reports and presenting to leadership.
6. Assists in the development, implementation, and promotion of library services, policies, and procedures.
7. Plans and sets goals and objectives for the future of the medical libraries, including determining services needed, the most effective ways to provide them, and the resources necessary to support them.
8. Coordinates daily operations of the library, including customer service, day-to-day library operations, processing new materials, maintaining existing resources, and information retrieval and dissemination (e.g., interlibrary loans and supervising volunteers).
9. Provides instruction and education such as classes, tutorials, seminars, workshops that support the goals of the medical libraries, and possibly developing in-service and outreach programs to market services and expand access to library resources.

2020 Hospital Libraries Section/MLA Professional Development Grant

Whether you are in the middle of your career or new to it all, or have worked for many years, the HLS/MLA Professional Development Grant is an opportunity for an amazing professional journey into education or research.

The grant is open to librarians working in a hospital, health system or similar clinical settings. Grant funds can be used for professional development through MEDLIB-ED or to help attend the MLA Annual Meeting or CE courses. It may also be used to support reimbursement for expenses incurred in conducting research such as a statistician to help with survey design, analyses etc.

Eligibility: The applicant must have been employed as a health sciences librarian within the last year in either a hospital or other clinical care institution. MLA membership is required and it’s preferred that applicants be a member of the Hospital Libraries Section/MLA.

Gail Kouame Selected as NLM/AAHSL Leadership Fellow for 2019/2020

The National Library of Medicine (NLM) and the Association of Academic Health Sciences Libraries (AAHSL) recently announced the members of the 2019/2020 class of the NLM/AAHSL Leadership Fellows Program. This jointly sponsored program prepares emerging leaders for director positions in academic health sciences libraries by pairing fellows with mentors for a one-year leadership development experience.

GHSLA member Gail M. Kouame, MLIS, Assistant Director for Research and Education Services at Robert B. Greenblatt, MD Library, Augusta University in Augusta, Georgia was matched with mentor Rick L. Fought, EdD, MLIS, AHIP, Associate Professor and Director of the Health Sciences Library at University of Tennessee Health Science Center in Memphis, Tennessee.

Congratulations to Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta Clinical Librarians Kate Daniels, MLIS, AHIP and Emily Lawson,MSLIS, AHIP for publishing an article on REDCap and data visualization in the journal Medical Reference Services Quarterly.

Abstract: Due to staffing changes, clinical librarians in a large pediatric health care system needed to streamline how user requests were received and how best to handle the shared workflow. This article describes how REDCap and SAS were implemented to improve the management of requests, capture comprehensive user statistics, and convey the value of the library services through enhanced reporting.
