Explore Your Identity to Improve Your Practice: An Introduction to Critical Health Sciences Librarianship

Health sciences librarians are increasingly called upon to address the intersection of identities and cultures in their institutions. This workshop introduces you to critical librarianship through an examination of identities. You’ll complete a creative assignment related to your identity and craft a plan to incorporate critical librarianship into a selected area of your work. #MLACriticalLib

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  1. Create a creative identity collage to explore their personal identity.
  2. Select and apply critical librarianship to at least one area of their librarianship practice.
  3. Identify appropriate classroom assessment techniques in order to assess student progress with information literacy concepts

Instructor:

Xan Goodman is a Senior Member of the Academy of Health Information Professionals (AHIP). She has presented on cultural humility and cultural competence at regional health sciences conferences. She is the co-editor of the ACRL publication, Disciplinary applications of information literacy threshold concepts. In which she authored a chapter about the social determinants of health as a threshold concept. Xan works at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas Libraries, where she supports three schools in the Division of Health Sciences, the School of Integrated Health Sciences, School of Public Health and School of Nursing.

Job Posting: Information Desk Associate (part-time) at Emory Health Sciences Center Library

Information Desk Associate (part-time, 20 hours per week including evenings and weekends)

Reporting to the Head of Information Services, the Information Desk Associate provides basic reference assistance at the library information desk or service point. The Information Desk Associate uses specialized knowledge to respond to requests about the library’s print and electronic resources, direct users to appropriate subject databases and provide basic instruction in their use. Assists in identifying or verifying citations and assists users with bibliographic management software. Performs circulation transactions and registration of users. Assists with computer workstations and troubleshoots and reports hardware or software problems. Monitors the physical environment and may manage library safety procedures. Compiles statistics for all transactions. Interprets library polices and exercises judgment in resolving user problems. Performs related duties as assigned.

Performs a variety of complex library services and operations requiring a specialized knowledge. May process, verify and change bibliographic information online. Handles requests for borrowing and lending library materials. Performs bibliographic management activities such as searches, checking the series and name authority files, and reviewing cataloging records. Provides research assistance and answers complex research requests. Interprets library policies, handles specialized materials and instructs users in the use of internal and external information resources. Creates permanent machine-readable bibliographic and authority records. Sets-up, operates and maintains audio-visual and television equipment. Searches databases to determine the availability of materials, oversees receipt/check-in of materials, and organizes/prepares materials for binding. May hire, train, supervise and evaluate student or general staff. May monitor and direct workflow in assigned areas. Performs related responsibilities as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
• A bachelor’s degree in a related field.
• Two years related experience.

2020 GHSLA Annual Meeting Postponed Until March 2021

The executive committee initially planned to move the March meeting to June 2020, but due to the current environment and the uncertainty of what the rest of the year will bring, we’ve decided to postpone the conference until March 2021. The 2020 meeting agenda will still be in place, barring any issues with speaker/presenter availability.

The 2021 meeting will be held in-person at Hotel Indigo – Vinings and the finalized dates will be forthcoming.

All registration fees paid for this year’s meeting will be transferred to next year’s meeting. If you require a refund, please contact [email protected] to request one.

Please note: There will still be two more GHSLA regularly-scheduled meetings for 2020. The first will be held virtually in June. The meeting agenda will be sent out in May.
